OOA Foundation in March 2017 partnered with Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF). The partnership was shaped to support WARIF`s work in advancing worldwide awareness on abuse and prevention and in ensuring rape and violence free society for all.
During the English As a Second Language Camp in Ibefun, Ogun state, WARIF`s team had a 90-minute classroom session with the OVC; ages 3-14, their parents and caregivers to sensitise them on the various sorts of maltreatment.
During the course of the sensitization exercise, it was noticed that some of the children have either tried/experienced or been involved in one strain of ill-treatment. The children raised concerns about how to deal with adults who touch them inappropriately and also expressed their displeasure on the habit of negative or derogatory words by their parents and caregivers.
In directing the children’s concern with regards to the usage of derogatory words by their parents, caregivers and relatives, a session was held with this target group by the facilitator. The parents were encouraged to speak to their kids with positive language and refrain from excessive punitive measures.
At the conclusion of the exercise, the children, parents and caregivers were equipped with the knowledge required to manage their sexuality, recognise abuse and properly treat it.
